Hello Community! Here’s a friendly PSA that may come in handy this spring!
Every spring, honey bee swarms start appearing in neighborhoods across the country. Most people who spot one don’t know who to turn to and end up contacting pest control. Swarmed will connect you with a local beekeeper who can catch the swarm and give the colony a hive where they can thrive, without charge as a community service. Their work has been featured in The Guardian and by NPR.
You may be asking, “Why should I care about the bees?” Well, as you’re probably already aware, bees account for roughly 80% of the world’s pollination. No pollination, no crops. No crops, no food for us. And while managed honey bees (the ones raised by people) are doing just fine, wild bees are not so fortunate. Roughly 1 in 4 native bee species in North America are at risk of extinction, and only a small handful of them are protected.
It’s completely understandable not to want bees making your home their home, but please consider this alternative to using pesticides. It’s healthier for everyone in the long run!
